Sitting on the Floor

The two tiny faces looked into the Camera.
Protruding teeth, a face on each side of her,
Lacy and Bear the so ugly they are Cute Dogs
Sitting on the floor, she held the creatures

I peered hard at her face, could this be?

Could this be the same little girl that came?
The Buck toothed little Girl so loved?
The sweet little girl that is so much of a Treasure?

She sits here in my mind today as it races.
Races through those years of wonder
The years it was just she and I.

The nights of 'Dad can I, please can I'?
The nights of "be home by eleven"
The nights of "be careful honey"
The nights of "take all 6 of you?"
The nights of “Dad help me with my homework"

The one night in the shadow of the room.
The night she told me "Dad, I'm going to have a baby"
The moment when my heart stopped, then the beat returned
"Dad what am I going to do"

What courage that took

Millions of Mom’s have heard that
But how many Dad’s?
How many Dad’s heard it first?

What courage that took

Well, then you’ll be a Mamma
And I’ll be a Grandpa
What we’ll do, is be happy
What we’ll do, is be blessed

As I look at that night, flickering thoughts run
Thoughts of our precious little one, the perfect baby
The little boy now, the sleeping little boy

But time roars on by me today

I received my gift from the ones sitting
The gift of the faces, the gift of my happy tears
The gift that is too good to have
The gift that is nailed to my heart

Thank you my sitting beauty
Thank you for our darling boy
Thank you for the creatures
Thank you for your love for me

Then I took the picture
As they sat there on the floor
Dad
