Pretzel

I leaned the recliner back, said, wanna take a nappy, your Papa?
Pretzel our little disabled Dog was laying next to me
as he did everyday.

The little Dog, that used to run wildly around the
dinning room table, through the kitchen, across
the couch that could no longer walk at all.

He was my best buddy.

I laid my hand on him and closed my eyes. It was only 9AM
but this felt good.
His little leg raised up and dropped, then his neck.
The control was now gone and the little nerves that had been
severed tried to attach again with no luck.

I smiled as I thought about the day last week when I finally
got back home from Texas and opened the front door,
saying, “Papas back baby boy”.
He yipped for a long time as I sat him right here is this
recliner and licked me like heck.

I thought about how he still liked to guard his food and would
never even start to eat until I faked trying to steal it.
God he loved to bark and growl at me.

That’s about all he had left, dammit.

Every 4 hours or so, I had to lay him on a diaper and drain
his little bladder now and he always looked so thankful.

How can you love something as much as I love this little fella?
I know this, never loved a woman this much.

So the day goes on, sometimes we play a little
but not so often now.

Someday when I sit here I’ll be without him and I will
remember these days, wonder if he’ll remember me to?
