Life's Ladder

Many like me get started in a career and never realize that is what it is.

A career

Just another job you think if you think of it at all and ever so slowly you
understand that you have stepped onto a ladder.
You look up the ladder, decide where you want to be and start your climb.
Some of the ladder steps come easily others seem to never be within reach
as you look at your industry goals and expectations.

In my case I never thought much about any kind of work other than what my
Dad did and finding myself in the kind of work I loved was a surprise.

Time takes the sharp edges off of surprise, disappointment and joy, so as
you struggle along, everything seems to just be natural.
You can’t forget that next ladder step even when it seems easily within reach.
Forget for an instant and someone will pass you on that ladder quickly
just as you passed others that thought they could get a minute’s rest.

I look at myself and think, a few months ago you were on top of that ladder
and awful comfortable being there.
Your horizon then was endless, you had everything.

Today, I have made that quick trip down not by making a mistake or not being
as good as the others but by a simple thing that involved
whether or not I could work at all.
Turns out that I could no longer work so that ladder evaporated and the next day
I was in the same place I was 50 years ago.

So forget the ladder, forget those ahead and behind you, none of it makes
much difference.
We start out with just about what we end up with.

We all ride the Roller Coaster, we go up, we go down but we always
go around and around.
You can look at the faces below as you ride and they change just
as life’s one constant sure thing is change.

If you want to make the man upstairs chuckle, go ahead and make plans.

The sweet thing about it all is the adventure.
Every step takes you over a different mountain or through a new valley.
Take a minute to look around as you travel because we each were only
given enough time to ride that Merry Roller Coaster once.
Yes, it goes up, it comes down and it always goes around and around.
