At the End of the Day

When this day ends
I know that the worst will be over. The rest will only
be memories, wishes and hopes.

Some days you win-some days you lose. Today I
lost and so did he.

It will be a good day to put where those other days
like this are to be put. Wherever that may be?

We both had a good run at it. We had become
family again.

Someday in our memories we will be again but
not today.

After lying on my bed and watching the ceiling fan
turn it came to me that this was not such a terrible day.

Every family, every person suffers a day like this and
today just happened to be ours.

We will both go in our own pathways now just as it
was meant to be and the sooner we stop thinking we
can change that pathway, the sooner each of us will
find peace.

Look back. Isn’t that the way it has always been?

Of course we will miss each other’s laughter, each
others frowns, each others hugs and each others
“I love you" but nothing has changed, not a
solitary thing.

The pictures will fade with time, the memories will
change a little with each new telling but the truth will
always remain.

Our minds may hold our memories, like the walls
hold our pictures but our souls hold only the truth.

Our souls begin that way and throughout life they
clutter up a bit from time to time with our minds and
those pictures on our walls.

Being the good housekeepers we are, when all is
said and done our souls are spotless of clutter and
only the truth remains.

The day will come when the phone rings and it’s
his voice and with only a few words we will be right
back where we belong.

Father and Son with all of the hugs, laughter, frowns
with today only another lost memory.
